"A Dream Come True"-- Dr. Husam Abuzarad, M.D.

How Crescent Community Clinic has become a valuable asset for Hernando County in our mini moment in history.

Brooksville, FL

In 2008, the team of five founding physicians (Drs. Abuzarad, Reheem, Joud, Ali and Alashaar) undertook the creation of the Crescent Community Clinic, a 501c3 healthcare organization, dedicated to providing access to Hernando County residents without insurance.

On three Saturdays each month the Clinic offered chronic healthcare on a walk-in basis. The number of individuals needing healthcare exploded, and within three years it relocated to its current location at 5244 Commercial Way in Spring Hill.

In 2011, a $100,000 grant from the Blue Foundation paid for a build-out at Winchester Plaza. The new 3,400 square-foot Clinic had three exam rooms, a triage room, two handicapped-accessible bathrooms, a conference room, office, medical front desk, waiting room, and a kitchen for staff use.

A year later another grant provided for an expansion to include a mental health department with four offices, two counseling rooms, an administrator office and a front desk.

As of 2023 statistics indicate that there have been over 120,000 visits to the health and mental care departments at the Clinic. This is about thirty percent of the total uninsured individuals in Hernando County (does not include children or adults without Medicare or Medicaid). Florida continues to rank near the top of the number of uninsured residents. In 2018 the percentage of Floridians without health insurance rose from 12.9 percent to 13 percent or more than 2.7 million residents.

Crescent Community Clinic is Hernando County’s only free healthcare clinic. By providing access to high-quality health care, the Clinic is reducing usage of hospital emergency rooms for non-emergent care and saving hospital-charity care millions of dollars.

Our doctors have caught cancers before they spread, saved diabetics from limb amputations, stopped kidneys from failing, reduced patients’ cholesterol level and blood pressure, intervened with medication to reduce heart attacks and strokes, stabilized patients with epilepsy, provided meal planning and healthy nutrition programs, helped smokers to quit use of tobacco products, provided limited lab through Bayfront Hospital (now Tampa Bay General) in Brooksville, ensured diagnostic tests through Spring Hill MRI donations of vouchers for tests, and referred patients for clinical studies at Meridian Clinical Research.
